Historic District Designation - Why?

Historic district designation has become an important tool for state and local governments in efforts to preserve the character of central-city neighborhoods. Designations convey more prestige to an individual property or historic district, deter unsightly new building, and make federal and state tax breaks available to owners of individually listed properties.

Duke Park Improvements

The new restroom building that was set in place in Duke Park on Jan 24 will be open for use by the end of March. To be completed in March are final utility and electric connections, accessible walkways connecting the building to the existing sidewalks, and fine grading and seeding in the construction zone. The building is a pre-fabricated fully concrete structure from CXT Inc. – 4 inch thick steel reinforced walls and 5 inch thick steel reinforced roof – with all stainless steel appliances inside.

President's Letter

There is lot going on this spring:

Opening of the new Bathroom at the Park: The City has installed the new bathroom building near the play area. It should be opening in late March. It is designed with all the fixtures set in the walls so it should be fairly vandal-proof and easy to clean. Hopefully this will make conversion of the old bath house into a pavilion easier.

Edison Johnson Facilities- close to home

Edison Johnson Recreation and Aquatic Center is just up Duke street next to the Life and Science Museum and has a LOT to offer North Durham: Raquetball, basketball, lap swimming, adult and child swim lessons, group fitness classes, after school care, summer camp, a large playground, “teen nite” socializing, and coming soon… a fitness room with cardio and weight equipment! Edison Johnson is the perfect place for your family to get in shape and have fun!

Updates!

The 2011 Night of Lights was a HUGE! success. Thanks to Sandi Gray-Terri for organizing and to all of the neighbors who participated. The set-up in the park was great fun with the UKE orchestra coming out to play carols for us.  There  is talk of making set-up of the park next year even more of a party!

Ellerbe Creek Challenge

DPNA has issued a challenge to the neighborhood! If 25 people become members or renew their membership in the Ellerbe Creek Watershed Association, DPNA will donate $250 to ECWA! We only need 10 more people! ECWA works tremendously hard to clean up the creek that runs through our neighborhood. Their work impacts our lives in many ways, from reducing pollution in the creek to maintaining greenways for us to enjoy. Healthy green spaces improve the quality of urban living immeasurably!

Please join ECWA today and help a beaver out!

Fall dates-

Duke Park Holiday Party is on Dec 2 at Ed and Karen Hubbell's home on Acadia street across from the park. We had a great time last year and Ed and Karen were wonderful hosts. Please bring a side dish to share. The Holiday party would also be a great opportunity to collect canned goods to support an area food bank.
